“Fun fact: being proud of yourself is synonymous to Pride month. The very word in itself refers to an emotion or trigger inside you that allows you to accept your identity and share it with others who have found acceptance. Being part of a pride parade is just like going to any other party, I need to prepare myself for the outcomes. I cannot decide to accept myself for one day just for the free merchandise and rainbow sunglasses. If I’m proud on the 7th of July, then I’m proud every day after that. Am I ready?”
June. Internationally recognized as the Pride Month. Celebrating the freedom of love and sexual diversity. Thousands have marched and will march this month and the upcoming month to celebrate their identity, to celebrate who they are. And yet, there will be thousands who won’t because they are scared. Not of their identity but of not getting accepted by their family and friends. Going out to march and being accepted by hundreds like you and then coming back home to be in the closet again is not a pleasant feeling. But there will be those out there who will be experiencing just that.
Gay rights are human rights. We stand on this level of acceptance internationally because of what the people of the LGBT community have gone through over the decades. The world is becoming more accepting, but there is still a long way to go. Our country still needs to learn to accept, they need to be educated. Acceptance needs to come so that people are not scared to march in a parade and be whoever they are.
Are you afraid to be who you want to be?
